HERMON — The Ellsworth Eagles turned in a strong second place finish in Saturday’s Big East Cheering Championships at Hermon High School.
The Eagles finished with 117.6 points, second only to the champion Hermon Hawks, who compiled a score of 127.1 points.
Others in the competition included Caribou 97.9, Presque Isle 95.5, Old Town 90.7, Mount Desert Island 85.6 and Washington Academy of East Machias 79.8.
Some of those same teams will be competing at Ellsworth High School on Saturday when the Penobscot Valley Conference Large Schools Cheering Championship gets under way. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and the competition will begin at 1:30. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Upcoming on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Bangor Auditorium will be the Eastern Maine Cheering Championships. Eastern Maine Class C teams will open the competition at 9 a.m., with Class D teams from both East and West competing at 11:35 a.m. and Eastern Maine Class B teams facing off at 2:35 p.m.
The top six teams in each class will advance to the State Cheering Championships, which will be held two weeks later on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Bangor Auditorium.
The annual Sumner Cheering Invitational will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, at Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan. Doors will open at 10 a.m. and competition will begin at 11. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Participating teams will include Sumner, MDI, Bucksport, George Stevens Academy, Presque Isle, Hampden, Dexter, Calais, Orono, Washington Academy and Narraguagus.
