Ellsworth cheer team takes 2nd at PVC championships

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth High School cheer team earned a second-place finish at its second championship meet of the season Saturday at Hermon High School.

Ellsworth finished second behind the home team at the Penobscot Valley Conference’s Class B championships. It was the second runner-up finish of the year for the Eagles, who placed second behind Hermon at the Jan. 12 Big East championships.

At Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, Sumner earned runner-up honors in the Class C PVC meet. The Tigers finished second behind Central with Bucksport finishing sixth in the 11-team competition. Deer Isle-Stonington, whose head coach, Amber Jones, was named PVC Class D Coach of the Year, took third in that division.

The next competition for all five local teams will be the Northern Maine championships Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Cross Insurance Center. The Class C teams will begin the day at 9 a.m. with the Class D and Class B teams following at 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
