MILLINOCKET — After a one-week delay, local teams competed Saturday in the Northern Maine championship cheer meet.
Ellsworth placed in the top two of the Class B North championships for the fifth consecutive time in the regional competition as it finished second in the weekend meet at Stearns High School. The Eagles were one of four local teams competing in the meet, which had been postponed from last Saturday ahead of Winter Storm Kenan.
Ellsworth scored 58.4 points to finish second only to Hermon’s 70.8 and bring home a runner-up plaque. The Eagles were also runners-up in 2017, 2018 and 2020 and beat out the Hawks for the regional title in 2019. No regional championships were held last season with only two virtual meets, the Penobscot Valley Conference and state championships, taking place.
John Bapst took third place in Class B North with 48.85 points, and Nokomis scored 46.3 points to join the Crusaders in the top half. Presque Isle (41.35 points), Old Town (38.9), Lawrence (36.65) and Mount Desert Island (33.9) rounded out the rest of the eight-team field.
In Class C North, Bucksport (61.3 points) and Sumner (59.7 points) placed in the top half of the field. Central (70.3 points) beat out Mattanawcook Academy (68.0 points) and Dexter (66) for first with Houlton (53) placing sixth, Orono (47.3) placing seventh, Caribou (33.9) taking eighth, Foxcroft (33.8) finishing ninth and Mount View (15.9) placing 10th.
The cheer season will conclude with the state championships Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Augusta Civic Center. All teams are eligible to compete in the state meet regardless of finish at regionals.
