EHS takes 2nd at Big East cheer championships; Sumner wins DAC crown



ELLSWORTH — The first championship competitions of the 2019 cheer season were held Saturday, and three Hancock County squads were in action.

Ellsworth High School was host to this year’s Big East Conference championships Saturday. The meet pitted the Eagles and Mount Desert Island against Caribou, Foxcroft, Hermon, John Bapst, Old Town, Orono, Presque Isle and Washington Academy.

Hermon, last year’s Big East runner-up, edged second-place Ellsworth, last year’s Big East champion, to claim first place. Presque Isle placed third, and Old Town, Caribou, MDI, John Bapst, Orono, Washington Academy and Foxcroft rounded out the field.

In Sullivan, Sumner was host to the Downeast Athletic Conference championships. The Tigers beat out Calais, Machias, Woodland and Narraguagus to grab the conference title for the second year in a row.

Ellsworth and MDI will be competing in the Penobscot Valley Conference’s Class B championships Saturday, Jan. 19, at Hermon High School. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Sumner will head to Mattanawcook Academy to compete in the Class C and D PVC championships Saturday. Joining the Tigers in Lincoln will be Bucksport and Deer Isle-Stonington, both of which were idle over the weekend.
