OLD TOWN — The Ellsworth Eagle cheerleaders turned in a strong performance at last Saturday’s Big East Championships in Old Town, finishing second to the Hermon Hawks in the nine-team competition.

Hermon finished with 136 points and Ellsworth scored 131.9.

The Eagles, and other Hancock County squads, will bid for Eastern Maine Cheering Championships on Saturday at the Bangor Auditorium. Class B competition gets under way at 9 a.m. Class D competition, involving both Eastern and Western Maine squads, will start at 12:05 p.m., and the Class C event will begin at 3:30 p.m. Teams will perform only one routine — there will be no callbacks — and the top six teams in each class will advance to the state championships, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Augusta Civic Center.
