DEER ISLE — The Sumner Tigers withstood their toughest test so far on Friday as they edged the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners 46-44 in a game that was close from start to finish.
Trailing in the final quarter, the Tigers knotted the score at 44-all when Gabe O’Brien converted a steal into a layup and Tylor Marin hit a three-pointer.
After making a key defensive stop and pulling down a rebound, the Tigers took a time out with under a minute to go.
“We spread the floor and ran the clock down until Gabe hit the game-winning foul line buzzer-beater for the win,” said Sumner coach Walter Crabtree.
O’Brien finished with 23 points and Martin had 10 for the Tigers.
Sam Grindle led the Mariners with 23 points and Hayden Ciomei added eight.
