Texas ousts Maine women’s basketball team from NCAA Tournament

ELLSWORTH — The University of Maine women’s basketball team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on Saturday after an 83-54 loss to the second-seeded Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas.

Texas jumped on the No. 15 seed Black Bears early and often to roll to a 23-8 lead after the first quarter before extending its advantage to 45-18 at halftime. The Longhorns (27-6) led Maine by as many as 35 points in the third quarter en route to the first-round regional win.

Tanesha Sutton led Maine (23-10) in points and assists with with 16 and three, respectively. Canadian national Julie Brosseau added 11 points for the Black Bears, and freshman Fanny Wadling had a team-high three rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Black Bears will be in good shape to repeat as America East champions and return to the NCAA Tournament next year. The team will return all five of its starters barring transfers, and only one player on the roster is set to graduate.

The tournament appearance marked Maine’s first since 2004. The Black Bears have only one appearance in the second round, which came when the team upset seventh-seeded Stanford in 1999.
