BLUE HILL — The Sumner girls’ basketball team will ride a three-game winning streak into its final stretch of the regular season after completing season sweeps of Bucksport and George Stevens Academy.
Sumner traveled to Bucksport on Wednesday and claimed a 45-43 victory over the Golden Bucks. The Tigers trailed by eight points early in the game but fought back to lead by as many as seven in the second half before holding on for a tight victory.
On Friday, Sumner notched its third win in four games with a 56-41 home victory over George Stevens Academy. Never trailing at any point during the game, the Tigers took a 26-18 lead into halftime and cruised in the second half in what was their highest-scoring effort since Jan. 25, 2019.
Facing GSA in a rematch Monday in Blue Hill, Sumner came away with a 42-37 victory. The Eagles (0-2) cut the visitors’ 14-point lead entering the fourth quarter down to two in the final minute, but a late free throw from Bri Flaherty and an offensive rebound and putback by Mia Richardson preserved the win as the Tigers improved to 4-4.
The three-game win streak is Sumner’s first since beating Bucksport, Deer Isle-Stonington and Jonesport-Beals in consecutive games in December 2015. The Tigers had lost 21 straight contests dating back to the start of last season prior to their 38-36 overtime win against Bucksport on Feb. 4.
Sumner’s next game will be on the road against Deer Isle-Stonington (4-0) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17. The Tigers will then play on the road against Searsport at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, before closing out the regular season against Washington Academy at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in East Machias.
