BANGOR — Ellsworth girls’ basketball head coach Andy Pooler and Mount Desert Island forward Derek Collin were among the recipients of top honors from the Big East Conference on Tuesday.
Pooler, who led the Ellsworth girls’ team to a 13-6 record in a 2018-19, was named Big East Girls’ Coach of the Year following one of the Eagles’ best seasons in 25 years. The Eagles finished sixth in Class B North, beating Presque Isle for the first time in more than a decade and MDI for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
The Big East Boys’ Player of the Year prize went to Collin, who finished fourth in the conference in scoring with 17.8 points per game and fourth in rebounds with 8.3 per game. His biggest scoring output of the season was a 38-point effort Dec. 22 against John Bapst.
On the All-Big East first team, Collin joined Ellsworth’s Jackson Curtis, who averaged 18.8 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game. Drew Shea, who averaged 11.7 points, 8.9 assists and 4.1 assists per game for MDI, was named to the second team.
On the girls’ side, Ellsworth’s Trinity Montigny, who led the conference with 16.6 points per game, was a first-team selection alongside MDI’s Maddy Candage (12.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game). The Trojans’ Julia Watras, who averaged 12.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, was named to the second team.
Candage was also named to the Class AA/A/B North Maine McDonald’s High School All-Star team. Lily Gray of Deer Isle-Stonington was selected to the Class C/D North girls’ team, and Bucksport’s Tyson Gray, George Stevens Academy’s Percy Zentz and Sumner’s Colby McLean were chosen to the C/D North boys’ team.
All-Star festivities will be held March 9 at Husson University’s Newman Gymnasium.
