MMA women post wins following holiday break

CASTINE — The Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball team followed its three-week holiday break with a pair of victories in its most recent contests.

MMA played its first game since Dec. 11 on New Year’s Day and claimed a 90-48 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Bowdoin College. The Mariners then traveled to upstate New York on Sunday and beat SUNY-Cobleskill 60-56 to notch a crucial conference victory.

On Jan. 1, MMA opened the Bowdoin Coastal Classic with a 90-48 drubbing of Rensselaer in Brunswick. The Mariners scored 32 points in the second quarter and 53 overall in the first half to turn the game into a rout and match their highest scoring total of the season.

Calais High School graduate Lauren Cook matched her career high in scoring as she poured in 29 points in the win. The Mariners also got 12 points and nine rebounds from Erianna Moore, 10 points, four rebounds and five assists from Makenzie Monzon and eight points and 13 rebounds from Sydney Echevarria-Briscoe.

After three cancellations in the next seven days, MMA took on SUNY-Cobleskill on Sunday in a major road game. The Mariners outscored the Tigers (7-6) 35-24 in the first half and staved off the home team in the second to improve to 3-0 in North Atlantic Conference play and hand the host team its first NAC loss.

Cook led MMA (9-2) with 13 points and added four rebounds and four assists. Echevarria-Briscoe added 10 points and six rebounds for the Mariners with Lauren Plissey contributing eight points and 10 rebounds and Monzon adding eight points, six assists and three steals.

MMA will host SUNY-Canton at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, before hosting Northern Vermont-Johnson at 3 p.m. the following day, Jan. 15. The Mariners will then face Thomas College next Tuesday, Jan. 18, in Waterville (time to be announced).
