MDI Girls Look to be Contenders

BAR HARBOR — With a sizeable crew returning from last year, the Mount Desert Island High School girls’ varsity basketball team is hoping to fill in the final pieces that will take them the distance in their quest to obtain another gold ball.

Trojans head coach Brent Barker says that he has a lot of veterans that are coming back who know what to expect. But, he has some players who have had limited to no experience at the varsity level, and those are the ones that ultimately will determine the destiny of the team.

“We have to get them caught up to speed. With only a few practices and scrimmages I am doing it on the fly. They are learning a lot of things, mostly defensively, that we have got to do a better job of as a whole,” said Coach Barker. “It is going to take a little bit of time but I am very happy with the progress we have made. Losing Brigitte (Pratt) over the summer and losing the two seniors that we had last year that were our core, we are still trying to establish our depth.”
