Mariners Win Season Opener at Machias

MACHIAS — The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners won their season opener over the University of Maine at Machias Clippers 81-77 in a non-conference match-up Tuesday night. With the win MMA improves to 1-0 on the season while Machias drops to 3-1.

Senior Jarred Sternbergh (Jonesboro) led a balanced MMA attack with 14 points and a team high 9 boards. Paul Campbell (Camden) scored a team high 17 points while Ben Russell (Farmington) and Joe MulCahy (Plainville, MA) chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively. Campbell led MMA with 5 assists while Sternbergh led the Mariners with 3 steals.

The Clippers, led by Cliff McDonald’s game high 22 points, trailed the entire night and couldn’t overcome a season high 36 turnovers. Zach Armstrong played well scoring 14 points for the home team while Brian Alexander chipped in with 10 points and 6 assists.

MMA will be back in action on Friday when they travel to the Gordon College at the Gordon College Invitational.
