Mariners, Trojans Climb in Standings

ELLSWORTH — With just over three weeks remaining in the regular high school basketball season, five Hancock County teams remain very much in the playoff picture.

The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners improved to 8-2 and climbed to third place in the Eastern Maine Class D standings after downing the Bucksport Golden Bucks 55-32 on Monday.

In Class C, the 6-6 Golden Bucks currently are ranked sixth, the 4-5 Sumner Tigers are seventh and the 5-7 George Stevens Academy Eagles are clinging to the 11th — and last — playoff qualifying position in the standings.

In Class B, the 8-2 Mount Desert Island Trojans climbed to third place, less than a point behind number two Oceanside, with Tuesday’s overtime win over Old Town.

The 3-7 Ellsworth Eagles fell to Foxcroft Academy on Tuesday — their fifth consecutive loss — and have slipped to 16th place in Class B.

The Eagles now must climb at least three positions higher to qualify for post-season play.
