Maine’s Vachon takes full control of women’s basketball program

ELLSWORTH — Associate head coach Amy Vachon has been given full control of the University of Maine women’s basketball team for 2017-18, the program announced today.

Vachon has been coaching the team on an interim basis in head coach Richard Barron’s absence. Barron took an extended medical leave Jan. 6 and has yet to return. On April 5, Barron announced his leave of absence would be extended through the entire 2017-18 season, during which he will seek treatment for two parallel neurological conditions.

Barron said he doesn’t expect his situation to be life-threatening and that his doctors are optimistic about his long-term prognosis.
