ELLSWORTH — The Machias boys’ basketball team joined George Stevens Academy and Mount Desert Island as one of the three teams to bring a Gold Ball to Downeast Maine over the weekend.
Machias (21-1) beat Greenville (20-2) 51-39 to win the Class D title Saturday. Eastport’s Shead Tigerettes (19-3) had a chance to win one earlier in the day in the Class D girls’ championship but lost 55-44 to Vinalhaven (18-4). It was the first state championship for Vinalhaven.
The Class AA titles went to the Portland boys (19-2) and Gorham girls (21-0), both of which were the top-ranked teams in the state throughout the year. In Class A, the Greely boys and Messalonskee girls completed 22-0 seasons.
Gray-New Gloucester (21-1) won the Class B title on the girls’ side by beating Houlton (20-2). The result left Houlton without a state title for the first time in three years. Monmouth (20-3) beat Dexter (16-7) 46-37 to claim the Class C girls’ title.
