ELLSWORTH — The Mount Desert Island Trojans knocked off previously unbeaten Presque Isle last week to move past the Wildcats and into first place in the Eastern Maine Class B standings.
But that hold on first place became a whole lot more tenuous on Monday when the Trojans were upset 32-24 by the 15th-ranked Old Town Coyotes at Old Town.
The 13-2 Trojans currently lead Presque Isle in the standings by just three-tenths of a point.
It was a week for upsets.
The Ellsworth Eagles, who have been showing improvement as the season winds down, picked up their second win with an overtime victory over the 10th-ranked Hermon Hawks on Saturday.
But the Eagles couldn’t sustain that momentum on Tuesday night at Bucksport as they fell to the host Golden Bucks 54-45.
With little more than week to go in the regular season, the Trojans in Class B, the ninth-ranked George Stevens Academy Eagles in Class C and the seventh-ranked Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners in Class D appear headed for post-season play.
