BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls basketball team takes on Old Town in their season opener Friday with five serious preseason games under their belt.

Scrimmages against Hampden and Lawrence were strictly practice, with the score reset after every period. “Those games were about seeing some rotation options and getting to play against good competition,” said coach Brent Barker.

During the Thanksgiving weekend the “Tip-Off” charity tournament at MDI gave the Trojans a chance to size up Bangor and Brewer.

Sophomore forward Kelsey Shaw paced the Trojans in the Bangor game, with 19 points. Sophomore guard Sierra Tapley had 15, and junior guard Sarah Phelps had 13, including three 3-pointers.

Phelps got MDI off to strong start with a two-pointer, a three-pointer, and a coast-to-coast drive for another two in the first minutes of the game for a 7-2 MDI lead. Senior forward Hannah Shaw followed with a left-handed layup. Kelsey Shaw made two shots in a row, one assisted by a Phelps steal and bounce pass.

A string of fouls in the first period slowed Trojan momentum a bit. But senior guard Sierra Myrick broke in with a three-pointer to pull MDI to a 20-10 lead.

Early in the second period, Tapley drove down the left side and her first shot was partially deflected. She got her own rebound and scored on a jumper. Junior Sarah Norberg nabbed another rebound, beginning a play that resulted in a Phelps three-pointer assisted by junior guard Haley Littlefield. Another three-points from Myrick and a very long three-pointer by Phelps brought the game to 35-25 MDI, and the second period run wasn’t over yet.

Kelsey Shaw got a rebound at the Bangor hoop and moved the length of the court, setting up another Myrick three-pointer.

The score at halftime was MDI 45 – Bangor 27.

Hannah Shaw started the third period with a fancy behind-the-back dribble move on a way to notching two. Sister Kelsey made all of MDI’s next 9 points in four minutes, with assists by junior Molly Carroll and Phelps. Carroll added her own two-pointer, and Tapley a layup. Junior forward Ali Bierman nabbed the last two points of the period, assisted by Tapley, for a 61-41 MDI lead.

MDI had good passing and ball control in the fourth period, especially by Carroll and sophomore forward Keely McConomy. Both managed some steals, and McConomy added a pair of twos. The Trojans’ final scoring shot was a three-pointer by Littlefield.

Of MDI’s 16 fouls in the game, Barker said, “the whole season we’re going to try to work on those weaknesses, but you’re always going to make mistakes. The girls know that, they know what’s going on. We’ll fix what we can. The goal is to be playing our best in a long run in February, so you start somewhere and keep building.

“It’s hard to believe we’re already in our third week,” he said. “We need to tighten up a little more. We’re excited, but we’re also trying to keep an eye out for what we may be missing.”
