BAR HARBOR — The MDI Trojans held off a late charge by Mattanawcook to nip the Lynx 40-36 in their season opener on Friday.
The teams dueled back and forth through the first half with the Trojans holding a 16-15 lead at the break.
MDI jumped out to a five-point lead early in the third period on a jump shot from Megan Phelps and two foul shots by Sara Carroll.
The Trojans extended that lead to 30-21 in the fourth period before the Lynx turned the tide, whittling the MDI lead to just three points with 20 seconds to go.
But that was a close as the Lynx would come.
Mackenzie Curtis led Trojan scorers with 16 points — six field goals and four free throws. Carroll followed that up with 13 points, including a three-pointer.
Mattanawcook was led by Brooke Hanscom with 10 points, and Rianne Gardner added eight.
“The first game is always a tough one,” said MDI coach Brent Barker. “You’ve got the jitters; you’ve got players playing new roles.”
Curtis played a key role in MDI’s win, said Barker. “She stepped up big time when we needed it the most.”
Barker liked what he saw from his girls on defense.
“We only gave up 36 points and that number could have been a lot less if we had taken care of the ball because they scored a couple of baskets on our turnovers.”
