High school post season about to get underway

ELLSWORTH — For the first time since 2005, the Ellsworth Eagle girls are headed for post-season play.

The only remaining question is where they will finish in the Eastern Maine Class B standings.

After Monday night’s 49-31 win over the George Stevens Academy Eagles, the 11-6 Ellsworth girls are ranked eighth with one game left to play.

That one game is a big one.

Ellsworth will travel to Bar Harbor Thursday to face the fifth-ranked 15-2 Mount Desert Island Trojans, who beat the Eagles in Ellsworth 56-42 in January.

An upset win by Ellsworth could likely boost the Eagles to seventh place while a loss would leave Ellsworth as one of four teams battling for the eighth through 11th spots in the preliminary playoff lineup.

In Class C, the 9-7 Sumner Tigers are ranked sixth, while the 5-12 George Stevens Academy Eagles and the 1-16 Bucksport Golden Bucks are out of the playoff picture.

In Class D, the 12-5 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are ranked eighth among the 15 qualifying teams for post-season play.
