ELLSWORTH — Ellsworth native Charles Katsiaficas reached a milestone over the weekend as he earned his 500th win as head coach of the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.
Katsiaficas reached the mark Saturday as Pomona-Pitzer, a joint athletic program between Pomona College and Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., defeated Cal Lutheran 70-48. Pomona-Pitzer improved to 12-3 with the victory.
Katsiaficas has been the head coach at Pomona-Pitzer since the 1988-89 season. A 10-time Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship-winning coach, he previously reached the 400-win milestone Dec. 29, 2013.
After his time in Ellsworth, Katsiaficas went on to become the captain of the men’s basketball team at Tufts University. He then served as a player-coach for Lobas Basket, a professional team in Lomma, Sweden, before joining the Pomona-Pitzer coaching staff.
Katsiaficas is the son of Charlie Katsiaficas, head coach of Ellsworth’s state title-winning boys’ teams in 1952-53 and 1953-54 and namesake of the Ellsworth High School gymnasium. The two were inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame together in 2009.
