Ellsworth boys, girls win Hancock County JV basketball titles

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth boys’ and girls’ junior varsity basketball teams capped off their 2021 seasons last week with Hancock County championship game wins.

On the girls’ side, Ellsworth claimed a 26-23 victory over Mount Desert Island in Wednesday’s title game at Ellsworth High School. The Eagles held the Trojans to a single point in the first quarter and withstood a late run from the visitors in the fourth to claim a hard-fought win.

Ellsworth got 15 points from Megan Jordan as well as eight from Aaliyah Manning, two from Brooke Pirie and one from Allie Neleski. Other team members were Alex Bivins, Alexis Bradford, Shaelyn Carter, Olivia Harmon and Wendy Manning. The Eagles, who finished the season 9-5, were coached by Shane Lowell.

On the boys’ side, Ellsworth claimed a 42-28 victory over MDI Green in Thursday’s final in Ellsworth. The Eagles took a 24-13 lead into halftime and outscored the visiting Trojans 15-10 in the fourth quarter to secure the championship.

Ellsworth got 10 points from Logan McGowan, nine apiece from Drew Cote and Brady Kenny, six each from Craig Burnett and Ethan LeClerc and two from Dylan Pung. Also on the roster for the Eagles were Cruz Coffin, Lucas Fenton, Tyler Goodman, Gage Hammond, Andy Herrick, Peter Keblinsky and Keegan Omlor. The team was coached by Corey Bagley.

The Ellsworth boys’ team beat Bucksport in the tourney quarterfinals and MDI White in the semifinals. The Ellsworth girls got a bye to the championship game in the three-team tournament, which also included Sumner.
