ELLSWORTH — Two local high school basketball teams remain unbeaten after posting two more double-digit victories.
The Ellsworth boys’ and Deer Isle-Stonington girls’ basketball teams stretched their undefeated starts to the year with a pair of victories in their most recent contests. The Eagles moved to 10-0 with wins Saturday against Washington again Tuesday against Foxcroft, and the Mariners improved to 7-0 with victories last week against Narraguagus and Searsport.
On Saturday, Ellsworth posted its biggest margin of victory this season as it defeated Washington Academy 87-34 at Ellsworth High School. Chance Mercier posted 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Eagles, who also got 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists from Gage Hardy and 12 pounds, 10 rebounds and five assists from Hunter Curtis.
Ellsworth began the second half of its regular season Tuesday with a 49-37 victory over Foxcroft (7-2) in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in Dover-Foxcroft. Curtis (17 points) and Mercier (12 points) finished in double figures for the Eagles in the victory.
The Deer Isle-Stonington girls’ team posted a 60-38 win over Narraguagus in Harrington. The Mariners got 29 points, five rebounds, seven assists and five steals from Luna Perry-St. Peter and 14 points, 10 rebounds and five steals from Macey Brown.
Deer Isle-Stonington then notched its seventh win the following night as it defeated Searsport 62-21 at Searsport District High School. Perry-St. Peter again scored 29 points while adding nine rebounds and nine steals to near a triple-double, and Brown contributed 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
The Ellsworth boys will host John Bapst (4-2) at 7:30 p.m. today, Jan. 20, before facing Hermon at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Hermon High School. Deer Isle-Stonington will play at Sumner at 5 p.m. today, Jan. 19, before hosting Greenville at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, and Bangor Christian at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25.
