BAR HARBOR — The Ellsworth boys’ basketball team completed an unbeaten regular season with another blowout win.
Ellsworth claimed a 72-45 win over Mount Desert Island in Wednesday’s regular season finale in Bar Harbor. The win improved the Eagles to 18-0 ahead of the upcoming tournament, where they will be looking to end a 56-year state title drought.
Ellsworth started off slowly to begin the game, but the Eagles’ defense kept them in front of the home team in the early going. Ellsworth then outscored MDI (3-15) 21-12 in the second quarter to carry a 33-15 lead into the locker room.
MDI pulled back within 13 late in the third quarter, but that would be as close as the Trojans would get. Leading 43-30, the Eagles went on a 25-9 run to put the game on ice and maintain their perfect season.
Chance Mercier scored a season-high 32 points to lead Ellsworth, and Hunter Curtis and Gage Hardy joined him double figures with 20 points and 11 points, respectively. The Eagles also got four points from Michael Palmer and two points each from Brett Bragdon and Miles Palmer.
Both Ellsworth and MDI will compete in Class B North preliminary round games early next week. Times and dates for those matchups can be found online via team websites and social media pages and will also be provided in next week’s tournament preview.
