Eastern Maine playoffs getting ready to begin

ELLSWORTH — Eastern Maine basketball playoffs begin next week.

The Mount Desert Island Trojans in Class B, the Bucksport Golden Bucks, Sumner Tigers and George Stevens Academy Eagles in Class C, and the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners in Class D all appear to be headed for post-season play.

But for the Ellsworth Eagles, a playoff appearance very likely will come down to the final game of the regular season.

The 16th-ranked Eagles, with a 7-10 record, will be very much the underdogs when they host the second-ranked 13-3 MDI Trojans tomorrow (Friday) in what likely will be a packed Katisiaficas Gymnasium.

But when it comes to the long-standing Eagle-Trojan rivalry, records sometimes don’t mean much.

Ellsworth kept its hopes alive with a win over the GSA Eagles on Friday and another over the Washington Academy Raiders on Tuesday.

In Class C, Sumner sits in fourth place with a 10-6 record, Bucksport is seventh at 8-9 and GSA is a solid 10th at 7-9.

The 13-4 Mariners are fourth in Class D with their regular season finale set for Thursday at home against the top-ranked and undefeated Jonesport-Beals Royals.
