DEER ISLE — The Deer Isle-Stonington girls’ basketball team improved to 6-0 on the season last week with high-scoring efforts in its past two games.
Deer Isle-Stonington began the second half of its regular season with a lopsided win in last Wednesday’s contest against Sumner. Returning to action Saturday for another home contest, the Mariners put their high-powered offense on display once again in a blowout victory over Machias.
Last Wednesday, Deer Isle-Stonington completed a season sweep of Sumner with a 78-27 win. The Mariners raced out to a 33-4 lead in the first half and never looked back to snap the Tigers’ three-game winning streak.
Rylee Eaton (22 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and six steals) and Kaylee Morey (21 points, seven assists and seven steals) both eclipsed the 20-point mark for Deer Isle-Stonington. The Mariners also got 11 points, four rebounds and three steals from Luna Perry-St. Peter and 10 points, two rebounds and four steals from Macey Brown.
On Saturday, Deer Isle-Stonington remained unbeaten as it posted a 92-48 victory over Machias. The Mariners went on a 16-2 run in the final three minutes of the first half to take a 47-26 lead into the break before outscoring the Bulldogs 26-3 in the third quarter to turn the game into a full-blown rout.
Eaton and Perry-St. Peter provided 25 points apiece for the Mariners with the former adding 10 rebounds and six assists and the latter adding five rebounds. Morey added 16 points, eight assists and three steals.
Deer Isle-Stonington will host George Stevens Academy (0-4) in its final regular season home game at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24. The Mariners will close out the regular season at Searsport at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25.
