ELLSWORTH — Two of Hancock County’s top girls’ basketball teams bounced back from tough losses with hard-nosed wins in their recent contests.
After a 39-35 loss to Greenville on Dec. 28 marked Deer Isle-Stonington’s first regular season defeat since January 2017, the Mariners got back on track last Monday with a 42-38 win over Shead in Eastport. The Mariners then began the new year in winning fashion Saturday with a 51-22 road victory over Machias.
On Monday, Kaylee Morey notched 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals as Deer Isle-Stonington took over the No. 1 spot in Class D North with a 35-25 home win over Schenck. Deer Isle-Stonington (10-1) made it four straight wins Wednesday with a 56-21 win over Sumner in Sullivan.
After a 49-18 loss at Old Town on Saturday, the Ellsworth girls (5-3) bounced back with a 40-23 road win Tuesday against Washington Academy (1-8). The Eagles earned the win despite missing both Trinity Montigny and Sierra Andrews, who were sidelined with illnesses.
Deer Isle-Stonington will host Machias in a rematch at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13. Ellsworth will host Maine Central Institute at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, and take on No. 1 Hermon at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.
