DEFY 5th/6th-grade girls defeat AYS to win league title

BREWER — Another strong year for the Down East Family YMCA fifth/sixth-grade girls’ basketball team has ended with yet another championship.

The DEFY fifth/sixth-graders concluded their 2021 season Saturday with a 43-31 win over Acadian Youth Sports at Brewer High School. The win gave the team the Eastern Maine Basketball League championship with an overall record of 9-1.

DEFY took control of the game midway through the first half as it responded to the opening basket from AYS with a 10-2 run. Although AYS roared back with the next five points to cut the lead to one, DEFY answered with an 11-5 spurt that powered it to a 21-16 lead entering the break.

The second half also started strong for DEFY as the team scored the first eight points to stretch its lead to 13. AYS would string together a 10-0 run late in the contest, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a DEFY squad that led by as many as 18 points in the final frame.

Members of this year’s DEFY fifth/sixth-grade team were Austyn Atherton, Allie Bivins, Whitney Carter, Callin Chase, Kennedy Clifford, Camryn Clough, Emma Frost, Hannah Frost, Caelan Gray and Sydney Mason. The team was coached by Dan Clifford and Josh Frost.

The championship capped off yet another successful season for the team after last year’s 15-0 finish. Clough and Mason were also members of last year’s team, which capped off the season with a Lincoln Invitational title.
