Cruise to benefit MMA basketball

BAR HARBOR — Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company is hosting a special bay cruise with hors d’oeuvres from area restaurants and a cash bar to support the Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Men’s Basketball Team on Saturday, Oct. 11.

The trip will take place onboard Friendship V or Bay King III from 4-6 p.m. and will depart from Harbor Place next to the downtown pier in Bar Harbor.

This cruise through Frenchman Bay during peak fall foliage will give basketball fans a chance to meet and hear from the new MMA Head Coach David Muchnick and to meet some of the team’s current players.

Matt Ketchen, captain for Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company and a former MDI and MMA basketball standout who holds a number of MMA basketball records, will also be onboard.

Other invited special guests include another MDI/MMA basketball star Shelly Gott, MDI varsity girl’s former and four-time state basketball champion coach Burt Barker, current MDI girls varsity coach Brent Barker, and current boys coaches Justin Norwood, Matt McFarland and Tony McKim.

Mount Desert Island sends more high school graduates to MMA than any other school in Maine. Tickets for the trip cost $25. All of the proceeds will go to the MMA men’s basketball program to help subsidize the cost of participating in the 8th Annual Lehman College Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York, N.Y., on Dec. 30.

Reservations can be made by contacting Coach David Muchnick at 326-2452. Payments will be accepted by cash or check on the day of the event. Please dress warm as it is colder on the water.

“We really appreciate the support from Bar Harbor Whale Watch, and other area businesses,” said Coach Muchnick. “I look forward to meeting members of the MDI community, as this area has been an enormous support to our programs over the years.”
