BANGOR — The Mount Desert Island High School boys’ basketball team narrowly defeated a skilled squad from Winslow High School last Friday night in its first game of the Class B Eastern Maine basketball tournament. This is the last year teams will play in the storied Bangor Auditorium, called by many the “Mecca” of Eastern Maine. A new arena is scheduled to open later this year.

“It wasn’t a great game and I don’t think either team will be saying, ‘that’s how we played all season,’” said MDI head coach Justin Norwood. But “we got it done,” he added. MDI won with a final score of 48-42. The sixth seeded Winslow team scored the first four points of the game as MDI adjusted to the speedy drives and quick transitions of its opponent. Winslow player Nason Lanphier accounted for those early points, scoring inside the paint.

Following that win, MDI was scheduled to play the second-seeded Presque Isle team in a semifinal game scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Bangor.
