BECKY MASON PHOTO Black Bear North girls’ team wins AAU state championship April 8, 2018 on Basketball, Sports ELLSWORTH — The eastern Maine-based Black Bear North 3rd/4th-grade girls’ basketball team went 4-0 over the weekend to win the state title at the Maine Club Basketball championships at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. After recording a 24-20 victory in its opening game against Auburn’s Maine Basketball Club, the Black Bear North team capped off a 2-0 Saturday with a 17-2 win over Blue Wave Basketball of Portland. Black Bear North then beat Lewiston-based Team Swish 17-6 the following morning before topping Seacoast Basketball Academy of Kittery 23-14 in the championship game to seal the state title. Black Bear North draws players from Hancock County as well as the Belfast, Bangor and Camden-Rockland areas. Local players were Sydney Mason and Calleigh Trenholm of Lamoine Consolidated School, Kaylee Bagley of Hancock Grammar School and Olivia Jordan of Cave Hill School. Howard Fogg Jr. of Knox served as the team’s head coach. More than 200 boys’ and girls teams from various grade levels throughout the state participated in the tournament. Winners received fully paid trips to participate in June’s Zero Gravity national championships in Boston.
