ELLSWORTH — On Sunday, January 8, Ellsworth Elks Lodge 2743 will host local competition in the 40th annual Elks Hoop Shoot, the national free throw shooting contest for youngsters ages 8 through 13.

Pre-registration will get under way at 8:30 a.m. at the Ellsworth High School gymnasium, and the competition will is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. for boys and girls ages 8 and 9, 10:30 for those ages 10 and 11 and 11:30 for those ages 12 and 13.

Participants must be registered at least a half-hour before their start time.

Youngsters must be the appropriate age for their division as of April 1, 2012.

In the competition, each boy or girl in the older two divisions gets 25 shots from the regulation foul line — those ages 8 and 9 shoot from four feet in front of the regulation line.

Each contestant will shoot a round of 10, then return to the line in the same order to shoot another 15 shots. Ties will be broken by shoot-offs in rounds of five.

An awards ceremony will be held immediately following the competition.

The three boys and three girls with the best scores in each age division will advance to the district finals in Bangor.

From there, winners continue on to state, regional and national competitions, with the championships taking place in Springfield, Mass.
