Trojans on Track for Record Baseball Season

BAR HARBOR — Second in the Heal Point standings with a record of 9-3, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team is atop the Class B pile as one of the leading teams in eastern Maine.

According to head coach Mike Swanson, 2011 may be the Trojans’ best baseball season on record.

“And that’s speaking from experience,” said Swanson. “We haven’t had a better season than this, at least since I’ve been here. I played for MDI in the mid-70s. We were good, but not like this.”

“The four or five of us in the top Eastern B are pretty equal,” said Swanson. “I think the seeds are going to be very misleading, our lowest seed could be our top seed easily. There’s a lot of good teams. It’s made for a great competitive season.”

En route to the playoffs, MDI is scheduled to play 7-5 Old Town, 7-4 George Stevens Academy, the 9-3 seventh-place Ellsworth Eagles and Hermon.

“The big game is between us and Hermon. They’re in third place, so whoever can hold on there will stay at the top first, second, or third place for the rest of the season,” said Swanson. “Against Old Town, GSA, and Ellsworth, I keep telling the guys, we’ve seen every ace (best pitcher) from every team already. When we see Old Town, we’re going to see their ace again and they’re going to see Dennis (O’Neil) from us. We’re doing the things that we should do and that we are capable of doing. Getting to the playoffs, there should be nothing unexpected.”
