BAR HARBOR — As spring warms up, so does the action for the Mount Desert Island High School baseball team. In scrimmage action, Trojans head coach Mike Swanson is getting a chance to see what his team is bringing to the table for the upcoming season.

“We are hitting the ball. We are not seeing great pitching yet, but they are throwing strikes and we are hitting the ball,” Coach Swanson said. “We have some younger kids like Robbie Logue who hit the home run. Colin Mooers hit two or three good line drives and he is a freshman too.”

Coach Swanson is going to be giving some of the younger players a chance in the first four games because several of his athletes will be out for some of the early season games due to injury and other conflicts. “They are going to have to step up,” said Coach Swanson. “Nick Shaw hit a couple of line drives too. I think we can hit fastball pitchers, I really do.”

The Trojans have proven to be very protective of the plate on offense. “We hit the ball really well and that is what I am pleased about,” said Coach Swanson.”

Dennis O’Neil is setting a high standard in his at-bats so far this season. “He is just tattooing the ball. He drilled a couple of line drive shots at Sumner too,” Coach Swanson said. “If he stays level and doesn’t try to go for that 320 out there he is going to have a heck of a season.”

Overall the Trojans are hitting the ball up and down the lineup. “Nick Shaw looks really confident at the plate,” said Coach Swanson. “He and Caleb on the bases are like Nolan Hall and Jasper Cousins were. They are really aggressive and they are not going to stop unless you stop them.”

The pitching crew is going to be headed by O’Neil. Coach Swanson has been testing his other arms to see who will fill the bill in O’Neil’s off-games. “Peter Logue pitched three good innings tonight. They got a couple of cheesy hits off of him early but that is going to happen. He didn’t walk anybody and that is key,” said Coach Swanson. “Kyle (McKim) came in a little out of control in the beginning but he settled down.”

K.J. (Bailey) pitched three innings the other night and had eight strikeouts. He pitched really well,” said Coach Swanson. “K.J. just needs to get his confidence playing at this level. He is throwing eight to 10 mph faster than he was last year. He is just ripping them in there. He had a couple of good hits against Sumner too. Now he is trying to kill it but that is a correctable thing.”

The Trojans have a flexible, athletic squad, which will allow them a great deal of adaptability when they take to the field on defense. “We can rotate guys around and make plays at other positions,” Coach Swanson said. “That is pretty good. Dennis did really well at shortstop.”

Coach Swanson is getting some quality help on the sidelines. “It is going to be a fun year. With Greg (Linscott) and Andy (Pooler) helping out we can do a lot of things at practice working on the fundamentals,” said Coach Swanson. “In the games it is cutting down on a lot of our mental mistakes.”

Though the team looks solid now, the real test will come when they face opponents from their own league. “After the first four games when we get our best defense out there, we are going to be able to match up against anybody, said Coach Swanson. “I think we are going to be competitive. It is just hard to gauge right now because we are just playing Class C teams.”
