Eagles Still on Top

ELLSWORTH — With just a week remaining in the regular season, the Bucksport Golden Bucks and the George Stevens Academy Eagles sit at the top of the Eastern Maine standings and two more Hancock County teams are ranked among the top five.

In the Class B ranks, the 11-4 Golden Bucks gave themselves a lift on Tuesday with a 9-6 win over the fifth-ranked John Bapst Crusaders.

Before that game, Bucksport held a slim two-point edge over the second-ranked 10-3 Waterville Purple Panthers with the Ellsworth Eagles knocking on the door just three points behind Waterville.

Ellsworth also improved to 11-2 on Tuesday with a 9-3 win over the Central Red Devils.

The 6-7-1 Mount Desert Island Trojans had been making a late bid for top five status and climbed to seventh place this week with a pointworthy 2-1 victory over Bucksport and a doubleheader win over Presque Isle.

But on Tuesday, the Trojans fell 5-4 in eight innings to the Hermon Hawks.

In Class C, the 11-2 GSA Eagles, who edged 1-12 Sumner 5-4 on Tuesday, have a virtual lock on first place, leading second-ranked 10-2 Stearns of Millinocket by a whopping 26 points.

And in Class D, the fifth-ranked Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners have upped their record to 10-3 with a win over the previously unbeaten Katahdin Cougars and another over the Lee Academy Pandas.
