Dan Kane to be inducted to Maine Baseball Hall of Fame

ELLSWORTH — George Stevens Academy baseball coach Dan Kane of Surry has been selected to join the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.

Kane, along with eight others, will be recognized at the 46th annual induction ceremony and banquet on Sunday, July 17, at the Holiday Inn By The Bay in Portland.

Kane has coached the GSA Eagles for 27 years, winning three state titles. He also played on two University of Maine-Orono College World Series teams in 1984 and 1986. In 1987, he was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Player of the Year.

Also joining the Hall of Fame is John Sawyer of Columbia Falls. Sawyer coached baseball at Narraguagus High School for 13 years and won a state title in 1986. As an athlete, he was a crafty lefty for Messalonskee High School and pitched for UMO in the 1976 College World Series.

Other inductees include Ralph Damren of Old Town, Dan Deshaies of New Gloucester, Thom Freeman of Wrentham, Dave Gonyar of Bangor, Amel Kiszonak of Lisbon Falls, Mike Mazerall of Norcross, Ga., and Gary Williamson of Bethel.

Tom Chard, a retired Portland Press Herald sportswriter, was named the recipient of the 2016 Sonny Noel President’s Award.
