Roberts, Potter receive Coach of the Year honors; MDI, GSA headed for states



ELLSWORTH — Two local golf coaches received Penobscot Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors Thursday at the conference championships at JaTo Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln.

Ellsworth’s Rick Roberts, who is currently in his eighth season coaching the Eagles, was named Coach of the Year in Class B. Kevin Potter of Bucksport received the honor in Class C.

Elsewhere in Class B, Mount Desert Island’s Kyle Nicholson and Gabbie James were named Golfer of the Year and Female Golfer of the Year, respectively. The Trojans edged Hermon to win the PVC title and qualify for the Class B team state championships to be played tomorrow, Oct. 5, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

In Class C, George Stevens Academy qualified for the Oct. 6 state championships with a fourth-place finish. The Eagles recorded a team score of 408 to finish behind Houlton, Orono and Mattanawcook Academy.
