ELLSWORTH — Preseason contests and practices are now over, and the first countable games, meets and matches have begun.
Preseason action concluded Wednesday with the final preseason baseball and softball games across Hancock County. Wednesday also marked the first day of regular season spring contests with two baseball games and two softball games on the calendar.
The baseball and softball regular season began Wednesday with the Bucksport softball team claiming a 13-1 road win over Orono and the Orono baseball team topping the Golden Bucks 3-0 at Bucksport High School. George Stevens Academy and Sumner wrapped up the day’s action later in the afternoon with the Eagles winning the baseball and softball games by scores of 15-1 and 19-7, respectively.
Hancock County teams had previously competed in preseason contests over a two-week period. The last preseason game was held Wednesday afternoon with Mount Desert Island hosting Hermon and softball and facing the Hawks on the road in baseball.
The tennis regular season is scheduled to begin tomorrow, April 23, when Deer Isle-Stonington hosts Calais in a doubleheader beginning at noon. MDI will also be in action tomorrow as it plays on the road against Hampden Academy at 2 p.m.
The first track meets are also set for the coming days with athletes from all six Hancock County high schools participating. Bucksport will host Ellsworth, Calais, Central and Dexter at noon tomorrow, and MDI will host George Stevens Academy/Deer Isle-Stonington, Bangor and Washington Academy at noon Saturday, April 24.
