    Youth teams hit the road

    VEAZIE — Two teams from Mount Desert Island, the MDI travel team and the MDI Junior Trojans, traveled to take part in the third-and-fourth-grade Orono-Veazie Hoop Classic over the weekend. One MDI team hit the road to play in the Old Town/Orono Bob Messier Classic tournament for fifth-and-sixth-grade girls.

    BAR HARBOR — Sixty middle school basketball players from eight teams stormed onto the court at Mount Desert Island High School Sunday accompanied by “Jesus Christ Superstar” performed by a miniature version of the high school pep band.

    ORONO — The Acadian Trojans dominated all comers at the Maine Basketball Festival at the University of Maine at Orono on Saturday and Sunday. The undefeated team won games by as much as 38 points. The closest game of the day was a not-so-slim 16-point win.

    BOSTON — The Mount Desert Island High School Indoor track team sent a small contingent to the New England High School Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston on March 6.

    SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Six hundred and forty spirited boys and girls who love to play basketball converge upon Mount Desert Island every March to compete for the Great Harbor House Shootout crown. The shootout’s popularity is a tribute to the power of a great idea and a great need, organizer Scott Phelps.

    TRENTON — The Trenton Timberwolves cheering squad put on a stellar performance at the Bangor Auditorium Saturday and placed fifth at the State Cheering Competition with a score of 103.9. Squad members are Rosie Gray, Haley Norsen, Colleen Sargent, Kelsie Morrison, Candace Rudow, Gloria Gray, Samantha Sawyer, Erin Beaubais, Samantha Sawyer and Jordan Harris.

    ORONO — The Maine Association of USA Track and Field will conduct a track and field officials’ clinic on Sunday, April 5 in Orono at the town council chambers, Town Office Building, 59 Main Street. Registration is at 12:30 p.m. and the clinic will run from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
