Trojan Track Teams Prepare for Season Opener

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School track teams (a total of 66 students) will compete in Orono in the season opening meet this Saturday, April 23, against Bangor Christian, Caribou, Ellsworth, Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft, Sumner, Washington Academy, Fort Fairfield, and Narraguagus.

Eight-year veteran head coach Ian Braun hopes to draw from the momentum of the girls’ 2010 season, when they earned a record of 75-14 and were crowned Hancock County Champions for the seventh consecutive year. The girls also placed fifth in the Penobscot Valley Championships and sixth in the Class B state championships.

The boys posted a record of 74-12. They were awarded Hancock County Champions for the fourth season in a row, were PVC runners-up (behind Bangor) and placed sixth in the Class B State Championship.

“I am excited, this is a really good group of people to work with,” Braun said. “There’s an even mix of returning veterans and freshmen. We do have more veteran girls and will be building on the boys’ side. We lost a lot of boys to graduation last year. But we will certainly be competitive on both sides.”
