MDIHS boys are back to basketball

BAR HARBOR — Area basketball diehards are rejoicing this week over the end of the National Basketball Association lockout and the beginning of the Mount Desert Island High School basketball season. The Trojans are revving up. The players have been chosen and the schedule is set. The MDI boys will play their first regular-season game against Washington Academy in East Machias on Friday at 7 p.m.

Jayson Burke, Nick Shaw, Colin Mooers, Caleb MacDonald and Ben Walls will return as varsity players for Trojans’ 2011-2012 season. MDI has added seniors Donny Hanson, Micah Welch, Kyle Greaves and Garrett Lee to the lineup along with junior Adam Gray, and sophomores Jon Phelps and Abe Philbrook.

Head coach Justin Norwood is slated to return for his fifth season with the team.

“What I’ve noticed already about this group is their maturity,” said Norwood. “Last week, some of the guys started talking about tournament season. And one of the kids stepped up and said, ‘You know, we’re always focused on the playoffs. Why don’t we just worry about the regular season.’ I thought that was really great. As a coach, it’s nice to hear that attitude coming from your players. So, that’s our goal, focus on one game at a time.”
