Mariner Athletics Hosts Special Olympics Bocce Tournament

CASTINE — On Thursday the Maine Maritime Academy Athletic Department in conjunction with Special Olympics, Maine sponsored the first annual Bocce Team Tournament. The event was held on the turf at Ritchie Field and hosted a total of 12 teams from eastern Maine.

The day began with an opening ceremony at which time Mark Capano, Program Director for Special Olympics, Maine and Eric Sabean, Director of Athletics at Maine Maritime Academy, welcomed all the athletes and their families. Katie Pushard,  the President of the MMA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, led the athletes in the Special Olympics oath and then declared to the crowd that the games should begin.

The 48 contestants played for several hours until an eventual champion was crowned. The student-athletes at Maine Maritime Academy assisted with setup, judging, registration and cleanup. They also served as fans supporting each of the athletes.
