Five DEFY Gymnasts Win All-Around Honors

ELLSWORTH — Five members of the Down East Family YMCA gymnastics team took top all-around honors in their first meet of the season on Saturday at Springers’ Gymnastics Center.

Ellie Mason at Level 9 and Briana Clark at Level 7 both each placed first in all four events — vault, bars, beam and floor — in addition to their all-around honors.

At Level 5 for ages 11 and over, Olivia Robidoux was first on vault and bars, second on beam and third on floor to garner first all-around.

At Level 4, Riley Crowley was first all-around for ages 6-7, placing first on beam, second on floor and third on vault and bars; and Kajsa Morrison was first all-around for ages 10-12, placing first on bars, beam and floor.

Of the 28 DEFY girls who competed against the Central Lincoln County YMCA of Damariscotta and the Greater Rumford Community Center, 11 of them secured the first of two qualifying scores needed to compete in the regional championships next May.

At Level 4, they were Kajsa Morrison, Syra Gutow and Olivia West; at Level 5, Gilly Rice, Olivia Robidoux, Eleanor Bannerman and Maddie Nida; at Level 6, Paige Sawyer, Katherine McKee and Sarah Danby; and at Level 7, Briana Clark.

“We have a very young team,” said coach Doug Springer, “with 10 girls competing for the first time ever and nine girls competing at a new level.

“We always ask our kids to do three things: try their hardest, get a little better and have fun.

“Since this was the first meet, we had to have a stepping-off point with this meet, and we finished with a really good stepping-off point.”
