EHS Eagles Climb To Second in Class B

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles have reeled off a string of 11 wins so far this fall, interrupted only by a 1-1 tie with the Presque Isle Wildcats in the fourth game of the season.

With only a handful of games remaining, the Eagles have climbed all the way to second place in the Eastern Maine Class B standings.

The Eagles trail only the 11-1 Camden Hills Windjammers, who hold an edge of 2.8 points in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal point standings.

Ellsworth is all but assured of home field advantage in the post-season playoffs.

The Eagles were slated to face Old Town Wednesday in a game that was postponed from Tuesday because of rain.

They will wrap up the regular season against the 5-5-1 Mount Desert Island Trojans next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Ellsworth.

Meanwhile, MDI’s hopes of gaining a playoff berth are riding on its final two games.

The Trojans currently are ranked 10th, with only the top nine Class B teams qualifying for tournament play.

MDI is slated to face the seventh-ranked Old Town Coyotes Thursday at Old Town before squaring off against Ellsworth next week.

Also looking toward post-season play are the 5-7 George Stevens Academy Eagles in Class C, and the 9-2-1 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners in Class D.

The Eagles currently are ranked ninth in the standings, with 10 teams qualifying for the Class C tournament. The top six will advance directly to the quarterfinal round, with the remaining four involved in preliminary playoffs.

The Mariners are in much the same situation, ranked eighth in Class D with 10 teams moving on to the tournament and those ranked 7 through 10 facing preliminary playoffs.

Out of the post-season playoff picture are the 4-6-1 Bucksport Golden Bucks in Class B and the 4-10 Sumner Tigers in Class C.
