Bucksport group dominates at Mars Hill karate tournament

BUCKSPORT — Members of Tracy’s Karate’s Bucksport branch brought home 23 awards competing in this year’s Graves Summer Kickoff Tournament on June 16 in Mars Hill.

Linwood Bridges of Verona Island, a ninth-degree black belt, was one of the top competitors for Tracy’s at the tournament. After winning first place in fighting among black belts in his age group, Bridges topped all men’s black belt competitors to be named the tournament’s grand champion.

Students from Bridges’ classes had strong showings in kumite fighting, jiu-jitsu throwing and the impactor, a device that measures kicking and punching. For the throwing routines, Tracy’s students rehearsed ahead of time and performed before a panel of judges. Adult students posted first-, second- and third-place finishes in the brown belt division, and youth students brought home second and third in purple belt.

Award winners for Tracy’s were Bridges (first in fighting and grand champion), Wesley Reynolds (third in fighting, third in throwing and first in impactor), Marissa Thompson (third in fighting, first in throwing and first in impactor) Jim Fleming (second in throwing), Rich Baubonis (third in fighting), Ella Mercer (third in fighting and first in throwing), Shawn Mercer (third in throwing and first in fighting), Lila Hays (second in fighting and second in throwing), Peter Reynolds (second in fighting and second in throwing), Julia Traub (first in fighting and both second and third in throwing) and Caitlin McKay (first in fighting and third in throwing).

Tracy’s Karate’s Bucksport branch offers classes year-round on Wednesday evenings, and new students are always welcome.
