13 martial artists earn black belt promotions

ELLSWORTH — Thirteen martial artists were tested and promoted to various levels of Black Belt status at the recent 96th karate and ju-jitsu tournament held by Tracy’s Karate-Ju-Jitsu.

The tournament brought together about 200 competitors ages 3 to 75 from throughout Maine and into Canada.

Two hundred trophies and medals in 50 divisions were awarded during the competition.

Those placing first, second or third automatically qualified for the Tournament of Champions at the team fighting competition scheduled in October in Bucksport.

Local recipients of Black Belt promotions included:

Master Kristy Tracy Dawes (Shichidan), seventh degree.

Masters Dean Murphy and Eben Richardson (Rokudan), sixth degree.

Sensei Kelton Hallett (Yodan), fourth degree.

Sensei Malorie Young (Sandan), third degree.

Senseis John and Lauren Dawes (Shodans) and Heidi O’Connor, first degree.
