MMA volleyball team wins conference title; men’s soccer ousted in semis



CASTINE — The Maine Maritime Academy volleyball team continued its strong 2018 season over the weekend by capturing the North Athletic Conference title at the school’s Smith Gymnasium.

On Friday, the No. 1 Mariners took on fourth-ranked Husson University in the semifinals. MMA defeated the Eagles (5-19) 25-14, 25-13, 25-17 to advance to the conference title game for the 12th consecutive season.

MMA then took on No. 2 SUNY Canton on Saturday. The Mariners earned a 25-13, 25-23, 25-9 sweep of Canton (14-13) to improve to 22-6 on the season and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The Mariners will take on Springfield College (23-7) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in Providence, R.I. With a win, the team would play Kean College (Union, N.J.) or Wesleyan University (Middletown, Conn.) in the second round.

In men’s soccer, MMA saw its season come to an end Saturday with a 2-1 conference tournament loss to Canton. The No. 1 Mariners (8-7-1) received a goal from Ellsworth High School graduate Colby Clarke in the loss to No. 4 Canton, which fell to 9-10-2 with a loss to No. 2 Thomas College (14-4-1) in Sunday’s championship game.
