MDI girls 1st, Ellsworth boys, girls 2nd in indoor track meet

ORONO — Three local squads were in the mix for team wins in the latest meet of the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League season.

Hancock County athletes competed Friday in the fifth meet of the 2021-22 campaign at the University of Maine’s New Balance Field House. The Mount Desert Island girls’ team beat out Ellsworth to take first place in the morning session with the Eagles finishing second to Hampden Academy in the boys’ meet.

Amelia VanDongen posted two wins for the MDI girls with first-place efforts in the long jump (14 feet, 11 inches) and triple jump (31-8). The Trojans, who finished with 91 points, also got wins from Sarah Weaver (55-meter dash, 8.02 seconds), Bella Brown (shot put, 30-2) and Delaney Sweeney (pole vault, 8-0).

Paige Sawyer won the 55-meter hurdles for the Ellsworth girls with a time of 9.67 seconds. Tori Watkins, who placed second in that event with a time of 9.98 seconds, would later add a win of her own in the high jump (4-10). Ellsworth racked up 74 points in its runner-up finish.

On the boys’ side, Aaron Lynch (200-meter dash, 24.63) and Drew Pierson (triple jump, 39-0 1/2) claimed wins for second-place Ellsworth (73 points). The MDI boys won the 4-by-200 in 1:41.86 (Daniel Freudig, Ieuan Howell, Noah Daigle, Miles Burr) and also got an individual win from Burr in the 400-meter dash (53.72).

Bucksport, competing in the afternoon meet, got wins from William Hileman in the 800-meter run (2:16.09) and 1-mile run (4:49.45) on the boys’ side. Natasha Monreal added a third win for the Golden Bucks with a victory in the girls’ long jump (15-2 3/4).

Ellsworth will be back at UMaine for its penultimate regular season meet at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21. The other Hancock County teams will compete Saturday, Jan. 22, with MDI and George Stevens Academy in action at 10 a.m. and Bucksport and Sumner competing at 2:30 p.m.
