ELLSWORTH — The Mount Desert Island varsity boys’ basketball team beat the MDI JV squad in Sunday’s Great Harbor Shootout high school championship at Pemetic Elementary School in Southwest Harbor.
The MDI varsity team cruised to the championship with a 5-0 record before topping their fellow Trojans 82-63 for the title.
The Houlton high school girls beat Hampden 62-60 in the championship game.
As for the middle school champions, the Medomak girls beat Camden Hills 47-25, and the Glenburn boys beat Houlton 63-42 for the titles.
Every year in March, junior high and high school underclassmen from across Maine gather at venues on Mount Desert Island as well as in Trenton and Ellsworth to compete for the title.
The event has grown from a small group of seven local teams in 1992 to a three-day event with 83 teams this year.
Games took place at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School, Pemetic Elementary School in Southwest Harbor, Trenton Elementary School, Mount Desert Island Elementary School, the Mount Desert Island YMCA and Mount Desert Island High School.
