Fall sports season set to begin at midnight Monday

ELLSWORTH — Two months after the 2018-19 sports season came to an end, a new year is just around the corner.

The 2019-20 sports season officially begins Monday, Aug. 19. Football, soccer, volleyball, cross-country and golf teams throughout the state are eligible to hold their first practices starting at midnight ahead of their first games and matches in the coming weeks.

Schools are currently in the midst of the Maine Principals’ Association’s “hands-off” period, a two-week stretch in which nearly all interactions between players and coaches are prohibited. That period began last Monday and will be lifted at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18.

Teams are eligible to hold their first regular season games, matches and meets Aug. 28 (golf), Sept. 5 (soccer) and Sept. 6 (football, cross-country and volleyball). Exceptions are made for several Aroostook County schools participating in the region’s annual potato harvest.

Full schedules and classification listings for the upcoming season can be found online via the Maine Principals’ Association website. Schedules for Hancock County football and soccer teams are also set to appear in the Sept. 12 edition of The Ellsworth American.
