ELLSWORTH — Football isn’t the only sport set to kick off the 2018 regular season this week as soccer, volleyball, cross-country and golf will get under way across Hancock County.
The 2018-19 fall sports season officially began last week when the George Stevens Academy golf team topped Ellsworth and Old Town in the opening match, and the action begins later this week for other teams from all six local schools. Games begin as soon as today, Aug. 30, and will conclude Nov. 17 with the last playoff football games.
The high school girls’ soccer season is set to begin today when Ellsworth hosts Old Town at 6 p.m. Three other teams will open their regular seasons at 4 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 31, with Bucksport hosting Orono, George Stevens Academy traveling to Dexter and Sumner heading on the road to play Central.
On the boys’ side, the year begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, when George Stevens Academy faces Dexter on the road and Sumner battles Central in Corinth. Bucksport will open its boys’ season later Saturday with a noon game in Orono, and Deer Isle-Stonington and Ellsworth will play the second games of boys’ and girls’ road doubleheaders against Calais at 2 p.m. and Presque Isle at 3 p.m., respectively.
In volleyball, Bucksport and Sumner will open the season at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow when they face one another in Bucksport. A half-hour later, Mount Desert Island will tip off its 2018 campaign when it plays a road contest against Calais.
Cross-country runners from all six schools will begin their seasons at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ellsworth Invitational.
Update: The Bucksport boys’ soccer team’s opening game in Orono has been rescheduled from noon Saturday to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
